  • Wasim Jaffer wants Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja to be fully fit for the big event.
The 2023 edition of the ICC Men’s World Cup will take place in India. The Men in Blue will look to end their duck of 12 years and win the tournament at home. In 2011, India became the first team to win the ICC Men’s World Cup final on their home turf, and since then, Australia and England have also done the same. So, going to the 2023 edition, the Indian team would like to follow the tradition and bag their third World Cup title.
Since the 2023 tournament will be played entirely in India, there will be high hopes from the team to win the trophy. And for India to bag the top prize, the players need to be at their best. According to former Indian Test opener and domestic cricket legend, Wasim Jaffer, India will need a couple of fit all-rounders to do the job for the team. And for that, he wants the likes of Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik Pandya to be fully fit.

According to Jaffer, the presence of multiple bowling options played a big part in India’s win in the 2011 edition, and they might need the same support in the upcoming edition as well.

“I think the key area for India to look at before the 2023 World Cup would be to get an all-rounder. I feel it’s very important for Hardik Pandya to be fit to bowl. Having Ravindra Jadeja along with him will provide a lot of balance.”

“It’s great if we have two allrounders. In the 2011 World Cup, we had plenty of options. Suresh Raina, Virender Sehwag were able to contribute with the ball. Yuvraj Singh, in particular, contributed a lot to the bowling department besides his batting heroics,” Jaffer said in an interview with CricTracker.

Jaffer said India will need depth in their batting department as the presence of handy batters at number eight or nine will ignite the team’s chances. He feels that the likes of Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur can strengthen the batting order.

“We also need depth in our batting department. If we bat up to 8 or 9, it would be vital. For example, Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur can come in. Allrounders will bring in a lot of depth. That will make the Indian team very strong.”

Speaking about India’s chances in the upcoming edition of the T20 World Cup, which will be played in Australia later this year, Jaffer is of the belief that India have learnt from their mistakes from last year’s tournament and now possess the much-needed intent for a turnaround.

“We have seen much-improved batting after the Pakistan and New Zealand games, even though it was against lesser-important oppositions. But I have witnessed the intent, and I don’t think the players will repeat the mistake again.”
