HIGHLIGHTS

  • Kapil Dev scored 175 against Zimbabwe at Tunbridge Wells
  • India won the match by 31 runs
  • India were reduced to 17/5 in that game

If one watched the movie ‘83’ where Ranveer Singh, who played the role of legendary Indian all-rounder, Kapil Dev, one would understand that winning the 1983 World Cup wasn’t a cakewalk. Having won only one match against East Africa, Kapil’s men were not expected to win even a single game, let alone lifting the trophy at Lord’s.

Going down the memory lane, Dev played one of the finest innings in the history of Indian cricket, an innings that, perhaps, changed the face of cricket in the subcontinent nation. The right-hander smashed an unbeaten 175 off 138 balls with the help of 16 fours and six sixes against Zimbabwe at the Nevill Ground in Tunbridge Wells.

With India being reduced to 17/5, the veteran put his head down to not only bail India out of jail, but help them secure a 31-run victory. Roger Binny, Madan Lal and Syed Kirmani chipped in with small, yet handy contributions and lent Kapil the required support.

On the back of Kapil’s brilliance, India put up a decent score of 266/8 on the board, after which they bowled Zimbabwe out for 235 in 57 overs. Kapil also went on to pick up one wicket and took two crucial catches.

The match wasn’t telecasted because the broadcaster, BBC, was on strike that day. However, after the release of ‘83’, one would have got a glimpse of how the atmosphere would have been during the epic encounter.

India would later go on to beat the West Indies, led by Clive Lloyd, in a thrilling final at the Home of Cricket.
