World No 6 Maria Sakkari says she doesn’t care about the outside talk as she underlined that she is still a top-10 player and also a participant of the upcoming WTA Finals. On Friday, Sakkari defeated Veronika Kudermetova 6-1 5-7 6-4 in the Guadalajara quarterfinal.

Sakkari and Kudermetova were playing directly for the final spot at the WTA Finals. Sakkari, 27, didn’t even come near to winning her first Grand Slam title this year, but she did have some other notable results. “I don’t care what people say about my season that has been a roller coaster.

All I know is I’m still a Top 10 player. I’m still one of the two players that might get the last spot,” Sakkari told WTA Insider.

Sakkari loves Mexico

Last year, the WTA Finals took place in Guadalajara, Mexico.

A year ago, Sakkari debuted at the WTA Finals and reached the semifinal. This year, Sakkari clinched her WTA Finals ticket by making a strong result at this week’s WTA 1000 event in Guadalajara. After clinching the last WTA Finals spot, Sakkari opened up about her love for Mexico.

“There is something special about this tournament, about the people, about how I feel about this place. I told my friends here, my Mexican friends, that I’ll be supporting Mexico in the World Cup because Greece did not qualify.

I’ll support my second favorite country,” Sakkari said. Also, Sakkari said that Mexico reminds her of her native country, Greece. “I see all the restaurants being full every day. That reminds me a lot of Greece.

No matter if it’s Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, they like to go out. They like their music. You’re outgoing. You like good food. You like the good life as we do, in a good way, of course. I mean, everything. You’re very passionate like we are,” Sakkari added.
