Man dies as caged cart sinks in canal at California course

A man was killed after his golf cart flooded a canal at the golf course at Terra Lago in Indio, California on Monday, just a few miles from the three courses scheduled to host the PGA Tour station this week.

Indio Police media officer Ben Jetron said the man, who was on the golf course and was in a course maintenance cart, was riding on the golf course track before winding up in the canal. He said officers and firefighters responded to the course shortly after 2 p.m.

“We’ll wait and see the results from the coroner’s office, but it looks like they drowned as a result of the accident. But this is all preliminary information,” Getron said.

The wagon was described as a caged wagon that was submerged on its side in the canal, according to a tweet from the CalFire/Riverside County Fire Department. Guitron said it’s common for staff carts to have a cage around them to protect riders from golf balls on the course.

Firefighters pulled the wagon out of the canal and the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is under investigation by both the Riverside County Fire Department and Indio Police.

The victim’s name was not immediately released.

Jetron said his department is currently investigating the accident as an accident but he does not yet know the condition of the driver or the cause of the accident. This information should become more clear once the coroner has completed his investigation, he said.

Getron said police investigators will likely be on the investigative track for a few more hours.

As of 5:40 p.m., officers can be seen on the south track near the 10th and 12th tee green approximately 100 yards from Terra Lago Parkway.
