That’s that – DC enter top four; RCB slip out

A 17-run win has helped them keep their playoff hopes alive and has also left RCB sweating. After a bright start, PBKS fell behind as Shardul, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav derailed the chase. When PBKS were reduced to 82 for 7, they had no hopes left. Jitesh Sharma made 44 and took the team close but it always going to be tough. All DC needed to do was to hold their nerve and seal the deal. That’s what they did and bagged two crucial points.

It’s just Lord’s world and we’re all just living in it 💙

Trouble for PBKS

Kuldeep has landed a massive blow to PBKS’s chances. Livingstone is stumped and the team is five down in the ninth over.

PBKS 66 for 5

Four down

The captain goes now. Axar Patel has bowled Mayank for a second-ball duck and DC are now slightly ahead in the contest. Onus on Livingstone and Jitesh Sharma to take PBKS home.

PBKS 59 for 4 in seven overs

Powerplay done

PBKS have made good progress but have also lost two wickets in the first six. Thakur removed Rajapaksa in the sixth and then struck the crucial blowby dismissing Dhawan on the last ball of the powerplay. The two wickets in three balls have helped DC bring some balance back in the game. PBKS need 106 off 84.

PBKS 54 for 3

Big wicket

Nortje has removed Bairstow in the fourth over. Back of length ball at 152.4kph and the batter has managed to find the deep square leg fielder.

PBKS 38 for 1

DC 159 for 7

Mitchell Marsh got a half-century to help DC recover from a wobble. There’s turn available for the spinners and Livingstone picked three big wickets to dent DC. Arshdeep too bagged three and was instrumental in putting the breaks on when Sarfaraz and Marsh were making things difficult for PBKS. It won’t be an easy chase and DC will have to ensure they take things as deep as possible.

Liam Livingstone is just the perfect modern T20 cricketer. Bats anywhere, hits long, on a day like today can give you 4 overs turning the ball away from right and left handers, fields well in the deep. Have to be multi-skilled

Livingstone turning up the heat

DC continue to hit hard against Livingstone and continue to perish. Rovman Powell is the new man in. Tossed up and spinning away from the right-hander. He went for the big hit, got a leading edge and is caught at long-off.

DC 112 for 5

Pant walks off

A six and a stumping. Livingstone has the last laugh as the DC captain is dismissed for seven. Pant smoked a six over long-on on the previous delivery and charges down the track for another one. Easy stumping as Pant had no hope of making it back.

DC 107 for 4

Two for Arshdeep

Slower ball into the pitch and outside off, no pace to work with and Lalit Yadav spoons a simple catch to point. DC are scoring at almost nine runs per over and need to keep going. Pant is the new man in.

DC 98 for 3 in 11 overs

10 overs done – DC 86 for 2

I hope one of the side-effects of so many young fast bowlers coming through is that the batters get better against the fast short ball.

02:34 PM&nbsp• May 05, 2022

Powerplay done

Arshdeep strikes now to remove Sarfaraz Khan. Slower ball and was mistimed by the batter. Sarfaraz is caught at mid-on. However, there’s disaster next ball for PBKS. Lalit Yadav would have been dismissed for a first-ball duck. But the pacer has overstepped and it’s a no ball.

DC 59 for 2

Marsh, Sarfaraz positive

Marsh gets going with two sixes off Rabada in the second over while Sarfaraz takes the attack to Harpreet in the third over, striking a six and two fours. He also hits two fours off Rishi Dhawan in the fourth as DC move to 45/1.

Dream start for Punjab

Warner dismissed by Livingstone for a first-ball duck! Sarfaraz Khan initially took the strike but Warner decided to face the first ball instead. And he ends up slicing it to Chahar at backward point.

Toss and teams:

Mayank Agarwal wins the toss and PBKS will bowl first. Punjab are unchanged while DC make two changes – Khaleel Ahmed replaces Chetan Sakariya while Sarfaraz Khan comes in for KS Bharat.

Delhi Capitals (Playing XI): David Warner, Sarfaraz Khan, Mitchell Marsh, Rishabh Pant (c & wk), Lalit Yadav, Rovman Powell, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Anrich Nortje, Khaleel Ahmed.

Punjab Kings (Playing XI): Jonny Bairstow, Shikhar Dhawan, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Liam Livingstone, Mayank Agarwal (c), Jitesh Sharma (wk), Harpreet Brar, Rishi Dhawan, Kagiso Rabada, Rahul Chahar, Arshdeep Singh.

Build-up

Punjab Kings have 12 points, as do Delhi Capitals. There is a lot riding on this game, with the winner having a very good chance of reaching 16 points and finishing in the top four. There is also the possibility of four teams finishing with 16 points, which will bring the NRR into play in such a scenario. Deepu Narayanan has detailed them here.

Coming to this match, there are plenty of similarities between PBKS and DC. Not only have they got similar points, neither of them have won two games on the bounce in IPL 2022 pointing to familiar inconsistency. Meanwhile, Both Punjab and Delhi are coming into the contest on the back of resounding wins. This clash is also the one between two of the most aggressive batting line-ups of this season. Delhi and Punjab are the top-two sides respectively with the highest Powerplay run-rate this season. DC also have the best boundary percentage (20.6) while Punjab are third on that list (19.1). Approximately seven per cent of both the teams’ runs have come in sixes. Here’s the full preview by Purnima Malhotra.
