Lisburn ready to home in on title after fixtures released for remainder of the season

Lisburn, the Robinson Services Premier League leaders, will play three of their final five games at Wallace Park.

he fixtures for the remainder of the season were released yesterday and although Callum Atkinson’s side will resume with a trip to Carrickfergus on July 23, Lisburn will then play defending champions Waringstown, the only team to have defeated them this season, at home.

After a break for the Challenge Cup final on August 6, Lisburn must make a second visit of the season to North Down – where they won by 93 runs two weeks ago – but they will return home for both their final two games against Civil Service North and, on August 27, CIYMS.

There is a four-way tie for second place after the first full round of matches, with Waringstown and CIYMS (with three home matches), Carrick and North Down (two) all resuming eight points behind Lisburn.

Civil Service North won only five of their first nine games and having had to switch their game against CIYMS in May because Stormont was unavailable must return there again on August 13. It means they will play only five of their 14 league games at Stormont.

Unlike the NCU, in the North West only points against the teams who finished in the top four are carried through to the final four games in the Long’s SuperValu Premiership and that gives Newbuildings a 19 points advantage despite having lost one more match than Bready.

The defending champions have been penalised because their game at Ardmore was abandoned as a no result so the big game in this second half is set to be the clash between Bready and Ardmore at Magheramason on July 30.

St Johnston lead the way in the Championship but because there were eight teams in Group A they have played one game more than the three teams who have emerged from Group B.

So although the Donegal side start with a lead of 20 points, only seven points separate the other six teams and with four games still to play, Burndennett, Killyclooney and Ballyspallen are still well placed to play catch-up.

The only Women’s inter-provincial to be played in the North West this season takes place this afternoon at Bready (2.00pm) with the (Northern Ireland) Dragons looking to follow up their victory on Wednesday in Dublin against Typhoons against Scorchers, captained by Gaby Lewis.

Also this evening, Derriaghy host Saintfield in the final of the Lagan Valley Steels T20 Trophy final (5.30pm).

Meanwhile, Ireland Men will follow the same warm-up preparation for the T20 World Cup as they did before the 2015 World Cup in Australia.

Yesterday, Cricket Ireland confirmed three games at the Coogee Oval in Sydney against host club Randwick Petersham on October 4, followed by a Sydney Cricket Ground XI the next day and a New South Wales XI on October 7.

The Ireland squad will then move on to Melbourne for official warm-up games, against opponents still to be announced, on October 11 and 13 before they fly on to Hobart for their first World Cup match on October 17, followed by games against Scotland and West Indies on October 19 and 21.

Their first opponents will be the winners of the second qualifying tournament which gets under way in Harare on Monday with hosts Zimbabwe the favourites to take that slot in the final on July 17.
