New Zealand women’s captain Sophie Devine has said that she would love to see the commencement of a full-fledged women’s Indian Premier League (IPL) and she feels that is the “next step” towards the growth of the game.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) currently hosts a Men’s Indian Premier League (IPL) tournament which will become a 10-team tournament in 2022 and a short three-team women’s competition and there has been a lot of talks going on for introducing an Indian Premier League for women’s.

Sophie Devine said that the success of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) in Australia has raised the standards of women’s cricket.

The success of the WBBL in Australia has been enormous in raising the profile, and the standard of cricket as well has certainly improved,” Devine said on Monday at an event to mark the beginning of live cricket streaming on Amazon Prime Video from Jan. 1.

“I’d love to see a woman’s IPL kick-off. I think it’s certainly the next step in growing the game globally for the women side of things. So fingers crossed and in the next few years, there might be something on the cards,” Sophie Devine asserted.

New Zealand cricketer Suzie Bates said that franchise cricket has helped in the growth of the game and she feels that Women’s IPL is the next big step after WBBL and The Hundred.

Any franchise opportunities supporting the international game is the key for the game growing and India is the next big step in my opinion after the success of the WBBL and The Hundred competition in England,” she added.

All-rounder Amelia Kerr, who has previously participated in women’s competitions in India has said that the women’s IPL would be “incredible”.

They’ve started with a few exhibition matches but we speak of the passion and the love for the game that India has and how successful the men’s IPL is. I think a woman’s IPL would be incredible,” she maintained.
