Are you not impressed with the way BBC Sports Personality of the Year treats golf? Show that you are in good company.

Ryder Cup champion Ian Poulter has shared his feelings about the event after the Solheim European Cup team was controversially ignored for tonight’s ‘Team of the Year’ game.

Despite winning on US soil for only a second time and successfully defending the cup against a large partisan crowd, Catriona Matthew’s accusations were condoned in favor of England’s men’s soccer team that lost in the European Championship final.

That’s right – the team that lost beat the team that won. Go and conclude.

• The issue of golf on the school curriculum

This, however, is nothing new for golf as far as SPOTY goes. Only twice in the ceremony’s 67-year history has a golfer won the main prize: Dai Reese in 1957 and Sir Nick Faldo in 1987.

There was more team award success, with six teams winning the Ryder Cup. However, the most recent one came in 2010. No Solheim Cup team has won this award, a trend that continued this evening to frustrate – but not surprising – Poulter.

The 45-year-old Englishman tweeted his disappointment with the competition and explained how the 2012 bid was the last straw for him.

“[I] He gave up on SPOTY years ago. “They asked several times if I would fly over the European Cup Ryder who was looking so hard to win it in 2012.

“So I’ve only stopped going for 48 hours until the committee cancels the order and gives it to the GB Olympics team when it says in the rules that they can’t win.”

Lots of other social media users have shared Poulter’s disappointment at the Solheim Cup team celebration…
