KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • England defeated New Zealand to win the 2019 World Cup
  • The match and the Super Over ended in a tie
  • England were adjudged winners as they hit more boundaries than NZ
On this day in 2019 (July 14), the world witnessed probably one of the most controversial and memorable games in the history of cricket. The final of the 2019 World Cup ended in a tie and if that wasn’t enough, the Super Over also ended in a tie. With the final scores not giving an edge to any of the two teams, England were adjudged the winners as they hit more boundaries than the Black Caps.

The world was divided following the decision as it was the vaguest way to decide the winner of any contest. As per the new rules, if a match ends in a tie, the Super Over will continue to be conducted till there is a clear winner.

Of course, the England fans were delighted with the result while the NZ fans were upset as they missed out on winning the elusive trophy by a whisker. Social media was flooded with reactions to the dramatic final that took place on Super Sunday.

“Don’t understand how the game of such proportions, the #CWC19Final, is finally decided on who scored the most boundaries. A ridiculous rule @ICC . Should have been a tie. I want to congratulate both @BLACKCAPS & @englandcricket on playing out a nail biting Final. Both winners imo.” he wrote.

You are a joke, ICC: Scott Styris

Former New Zealand all-rounder Scott Styris lambasted ICC and called apex body a joke. Being a Kiwi, he was hurt by the manner in which the winner of the mega final was adjudged. Check out his tweet –

Don’t take up sport: Jimmy Neesham

Not once, Jimmy Neesham has twice ended up on the losing side of a World Cup final. But the 2019 WC defeat probably would have hurt him more as only boundary count separated the two teams. He was so hurt by the result and hinted that it would stay in his mind forever.

What just happened: Chhetri

At the time when NZ and England were up against each other for the WC trophy, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic were involved in high octane Wimbledon final. Witnessing the action unfold on the cricket field and the tennis court, India legend Sunil Chhetri wrote that those were ‘incredible few hours of sports’.

I retire: Jade Dernbach

Former England pacer Jade Dernbach probably came up with the most memorable tweet after the WC final. He hadn’t played for England since 2014 and wasn’t in the scheme of things to play for the Three Lions again. Still, Dernbach hogged the limelight as he quit international cricket a few minutes after England lifted the World Cup trophy.

He has now moved to Italy and plays international cricket for them. Dernbach played 24 ODIs and 34 T20Is for England.
