Arsenal-Manchester United sets Premier League viewership record in U.S.

Arsenal’s 3-2 win over Manchester United on Sunday was the most-watched Premier League match in United States history, NBC Sports said Tuesday. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The game averaged 1.92 million viewers across NBC, Peacock and NBC Sports Digital platforms.
  • NBC Sports also set a record for a simulstreamed Premier League match, with an Average Minute Audience of 510,000 viewers.
  • The Spanish-language broadcast on Telemundo drew 382,000 viewers, the highest total since Manchester City vs. Liverpool last April (440,000).
  • Following the victory, Arsenal sits five points ahead of reigning champion Manchester City atop the EPL table.

What led to the record viewership?

No matter the televised sport, matches and the quality of a game are the rocket fuel for viewership. NBC had a mouthwatering setup here with table-leading Arsenal and fourth-place Manchester United. Obviously, these are two of the most storied clubs in Europe, and there’s likely still a World Cup high for viewers wanting to see players they saw in Qatar.

The game drew 1.412 million viewers on Big NBC alone and that was amplified by high streaming numbers. Keep in mind there’s a bump for all sports viewership now with out of home (OOH) viewing, which accounts for a huge number of people watching TV but until recently was only measurable via a best guess. (The advent of the Nielsen Portable People Meters means OOH can be more accurately measured.) This is the first year of NBCUniversal’s six-year extension of its partnership with the Premier League, signed in November 2021, and the company already has its signature viewership game. — Deitsch
