Eugenie Bouchard hits the court nearly a year after surgery

Eugenie Bouchard is celebrating her return to the court.

On Tuesday, the 28-year-old tennis player shared photos on Instagram from her “first exhibition set in a while,” roughly nine months after undergoing shoulder surgery.

“I had the best time playing in front of a crowd. My cheeks hurt from smiling the whole time!” Bouchard captioned the post. “This mixed format @championsseriestennis is so fun. One small step…”

Bouchard recorded wins in the singles and mixed doubles, sealing a victory for her and partner Tommy Haas at the SoCal Honda Dealers Helpful Cup in California. It’s the first new mixed team event on the Champions Series Tennis tour, according to a press release on the program’s website.

“I played better than I expected,” Bouchard said. “We had really tough conditions. We’re both very cold out here and it’s hard to serve sometimes with the wind. But I just tried to hit the shots I’ve been doing in practice since I’ve been training for my comeback.”

Bouchard tore her subscapularis in March 2021 during a first-round match at the Guadalajara Open. Three months later, Bouchard decided to have arthroscopic surgery after attempting “every form of conservative treatment and rehab known to man.”

“I have a tough road of rehab ahead of me, but my spirits are high and I will work hard to get back to the job that I love,” Bouchard wrote on Instagram last June.

Bouchard has continued to update her social media followers on her progress, even posting a video to TikTok in December that showed her hitting a tennis ball for the first time in eight months.

Bouchard rose to fame after reaching the Wimbledon final in 2014.
